Santorini, the picturesque island in the Aegean Sea, is renowned for its stunning sunsets and iconic whitewashed buildings. However, its unique volcanic beaches are equally captivating, offering a diverse and breathtaking experience for beachgoers. Among these, Red Beach, Black Beach, and White Beach stand out, each showcasing nature’s artistry in vivid colors. Let’s explore what makes these beaches must-visit destinations.
During my recent visit to Santorini, I traveled alone, except for a trip to Red Beach with a friend I met in Oia. Unfortunately, I did not have the opportunity to visit White Beach or Black Beach. However, I would love to return to Santorini with my partner in the future to create wonderful memories together. In the meantime, I would like to share some basic information about White Beach and Black Beach.

White beach
White Beach is one of the most enchanting beaches on Santorini, situated on the southern coast of the island, just after the Red Sand Beach.
Accessible only by boat or a challenging hike, White Beach provides a secluded escape just 15 km from Santorini’s capital, Fira. This small, uninhabited bay is encircled by towering white limestone cliffs that beautifully contrast with the deep blue sea. The beach features black coarse sand interspersed with large white and gray pebbles, resulting in a unique and visually striking shoreline.
White Beach is an excellent destination for snorkeling, featuring crystal-clear waters and secluded coastal nooks ready to be discovered. Although there are no extensive facilities, visitors can find a few sunbeds with umbrellas and a small cave canteen offering essential supplies. Due to its remote location and limited amenities, White Beach remains tranquil and secluded, making it an ideal retreat for relaxation and peaceful moments.
No doubt, the white beaches are one of the reasons I will return to Santorini, and I will come back with my partner.

How to Visit White Beach?
- It can be reached by boat from Akrotiri port.
- Take a boat from the red sand beaches. The journey lasts only 15 minutes.
- You can walk from the nearby Cambia Beach, but the path is challenging to navigate. This destination is ideal for adventure enthusiasts, and the scenery is truly rewarding

Black Sand Beach
Most of Santorini is situated along the rim of a volcano, and everywhere you go, you will be reminded of the island’s history of volcanic activity, particularly at Black Sand Beach. The volcanic activity on the island is evident at this beach in the form of its distinctive black sand. Over the centuries, molten rock from various volcanic eruptions solidified and subsequently eroded. As the name suggests, the sand is dark and enigmatic, while the ocean is strikingly clear and blue. This palette of contrasting colors provides excellent opportunities for sightseeing and photography.
The black sand absorbs heat, which means you’ll need to wear sandals while walking on it. Additionally, sitting directly on the sand may be uncomfortable, so you should either lay down a towel or blanket or use a sun chair.
How to Visit White Beach?
- Perissa Beach is located approximately a 30-minute drive from Santorini Airport and Fira.
- Take a boat from the red sand beaches.
- You can also fly to Milos and then take a flight to Santorini Airport from there.

Red Beach
It’s no surprise that people are drawn to Red Beach; it is often described as spectacular, unique, and utterly breathtaking. When I first arrived, I couldn’t help but exclaim, “This Red Beach is more beautiful than I ever imagined! How can it be so stunning?” If you ask me which beach to visit first in Santorini, Red Beach would undoubtedly be my top recommendation.
Nestled near the village of Akrotiri, Red Beach is one of the island’s most striking locations, offering a rare and dramatic landscape. The red volcanic cliffs that surround the beach create a stunning contrast against the turquoise waters, making it a photographer’s dream. The sand, composed of a mix of red and black volcanic pebbles, enhances its uniqueness and provides an ideal spot for sunbathing.
If you have a few days to explore Santorini, Red Beach is a must-visit destination. Including it in your itinerary will only enhance your appreciation for this enchanting island.

How to Visit White Beach?
- Renting a car in Santorini is possible for as little as 25 euros per day, with convenient pickup options available directly from the airport, port, or your hotel. Utilizing a car rental enables visitors to explore the Red Beach and numerous other attractions in Santorini at their own pace.
- Taking the bus from Fira to Red Beach is a convenient option. You can catch the bus on the Fira to Akrotiri route. Red Beach is just a 10 to 15-minute walk from the bus stop. Fira is home to the island’s central bus station, which offers connections to various areas across the island. Buses to Akrotiri run approximately every 1.5 hours.
Tip: Since buses do not always stop at every scheduled stop on their route, we advise visitors to inform the driver of their final destination to ensure that a stop is made there.
