It is a must-visit destination for history enthusiasts, featuring a remarkable array of majestic ruins, including the world-famous Acropolis and the Ancient Agora, among others. Additionally, the city boasts charming neighborhoods, breathtaking viewpoints, and a variety of museums, all while being ideally situated for fantastic day trips throughout Greece. In this guide, I will share some must-visit viewpoints that you should not miss when traveling to Athens.

The monuments of Athens are typically included in the Athens special ticket package, which costs €30. If you plan to visit the Acropolis and two additional attractions, purchasing this ticket package is a cost-effective option. This package includes access to the Acropolis, the Ancient Agora, Hadrian’s Library, the Roman Agora, the Temple of Zeus, the Arch of Hadrian, Kerameikos, and the Lyceum.

Where can you buy this ticket?

At the entrance of the attractions, you will find a bulletin board that displays information about two types of tickets. The first ticket costs 6 euros for individual access to this attraction, while the second option is a ticket package priced at 30 euros, which includes access to 8 different sceneries. Once you purchase the ticket package, you simply need to scan the QR code at the entrance.

The Temple of Zeus is the site where the god Zeus was enshrined. Its construction took nearly 600 years. During the Middle Ages, as Athens expanded, many people removed marble from the temple to build their homes. Originally, the temple had 104 columns, but now only less than one-fifth remain. However, you can still see the delicate carvings at the top, which evoke the majesty of the original structure from the remaining pillars.

Hadrian's Arch

The Hadrian’s Arch is situated adjacent to the Temple of Zeus. The protagonist of Hadrian and Hadrian’s Library is the same individual. According to legend, the people of Athens expressed their gratitude to him for constructing numerous temples and monumental arches throughout the city. The arch stands approximately 18 meters high and 14 meters wide. This semi-circular marble structure is supported by Corinthian columns and features three door openings. It is both elegant and majestic. The arch serves not only to commemorate Hadrian but also to delineate the boundaries between the old and new sections of Athens, making it a worthwhile destination to visit.

Of all the structures located at the Acropolis, the Parthenon is the most renowned. While the Parthenon is the most famous site at the Acropolis, there are several other ruins worth visiting, including the Theatre of Dionysus, the Propylaea, the Erechtheion, and the Temple of Athena Nike.

Dionysus is the Greek god of wine and drama. The purpose of the theater was to honor the god, bringing joy to the people. This was important, as they feared the wrath of the gods. The theater was originally constructed in the sixth century BC and later restored during the Roman period. Its seating and walkways are well-designed and can accommodate approximately 17,000 spectators.

The Odeon of Herodes Atticus is a theater that dates back to the 2nd century. It is still in use today, although access is restricted to those who have tickets for performances. The Odeon was constructed in 161 AD as a gift from the philosopher Herodes Atticus to the city of Athens. Fortunately, visitors can still enjoy a good vantage point of the theater from the southwest slope of the Acropolis.

Unlike a typical temple, which usually honors a single god, this temple accommodates multiple divine figures.

Overall

Witnessing world-famous monuments with my own eyes often feels disappointing, as many of the monuments in Greece are not well preserved. However, I still find it remarkable to experience them firsthand, given the vicissitudes of their millennia-long history.
