4 local markets in London

Table of Contents

After arriving in Europe, I discovered that every city has a shopping street or department store, such as the Champs-Élysées in Paris, France, and Oxford Street in London, England. However, these shopping avenues primarily feature high-priced boutiques, sports brands, and the trendiest labels currently available.

Nonetheless, that shopping street is not the most fascinating in the city; the local market is more appealing to me because it allows you to observe the lives of local people and briefly integrate with them.

When I was in Paris, the Marché Bastille was my favorite market; however, I believe the Camden Market is my top choice in this international city, London.

In London, you can experience a variety of attractions, including impressive skyscrapers, local markets, and vibrant streets. However, as times change, many of these markets are disappearing.

London can be described as a city characterized by the dynamic interplay of old and new cultures. However, markets play an indispensable role in British life, as they embody traditional lifestyles. One notable example is Borough Market, which has a history dating back to 1014.

The market at that time was not located in the streets of Borough; instead, vendors of all sizes gathered near London Bridge, selling a variety of goods such as fruits, clothing, and more. Similar to the traditional markets of Taiwan, in the 13th century, the government merged the two markets—Jubilee Market and Green Market—into what is now known as Borough Market.

Today, I would like to share with you some markets I visited during my trip to London: Covent Garden, Borough Market, Camden Market, and Leadenhall Market.

Covent Garden, Borough Market, Camden Market and Leadenhall Market

Covent Garden Market

The first place I want to share with you is Covent Garden, which was the first market I visited when I was in London.

Covent Garden is a must-visit destination when you travel to London, as it is always bustling with people. In addition to the indoor markets, the nearby streets are lined with numerous boutiques and shops. Of course, no famous location would be complete without a variety of restaurants, including gourmet establishments representing various cuisines, as well as exotic cafes and bars offering unique specialties.

Covent Garden was originally a 17th-century fruit market that has since relocated to South London. However, it remains full of vigor and vitality, making it well worth a visit if you are in London.

Borough Market

If you ask me which local market you should visit in London, I would recommend Borough Market, which you cannot miss. Borough Market has been selected by CNN as one of the top ten food markets in the world, and many well-known restaurants come here daily to select fresh ingredients and pick up goods.

In 1014, Borough Market consisted of numerous small vendors near London Bridge selling goods such as seafood, vegetables, and daily necessities. However, in the 13th century, the market relocated to Borough Street. The government aimed to address the growing demand by merging the Jubilee Market and Green Market, resulting in the Borough Market we know today. It is the oldest fresh fruit and vegetable market in London and currently hosts more than 100 independent vendors.

Now, it offers a variety of fresh fruits and vegetables, seafood, meat, cheese, traditional British cuisine, and specialty foods from other countries. Compared to prices in London, it is much more affordable here!

Oh! It has also appeared in the Sherlock Holmes series!

In this market, many stall owners use their own raw materials for baking, brewing, and roasting food and drinks. They strive to preserve the original taste of the ingredients to the greatest extent possible.

From savory dishes to desserts, and from England to Spain, there is everything you need to enjoy all kinds of food.

Camden Market

The second market that I believe cannot be missed in London is Camden Market, which was previously seen as a rebellious area in the minds of Londoners. However, things changed significantly after the hippie punk movement emerged in the 1960s.

In 1974, a few small vendors began selling goods during the holiday season. Over time, the scale of these operations grew significantly, eventually leading to the merger of six markets into what is now known as Camden Market.

After you exit the subway station, you will find yourself on Camden High Street, where you can easily see what is being sold due to the unique decorations on the walls.

To be honest, I don’t like the items from this street because they are quite rough and lack quality.

After you pass the canal, you officially enter Camden Market.

In this place, you can see many young people coming to dig for various treasures! I believe you can also find some interesting items here.

You can definitely find street food here.

During the FIFA World Cup season, many people gather here to watch the games after strolling through Camden Market.

The Camden Market is so large that I sometimes didn’t even realize I had entered another market! If you plan a trip to London, be sure not to miss this one.

Leadenhall market

Leadenhall Market is different from Borough Market and Camden Market, which attract many tourists. Instead, I noticed that many Londoners come here for lunch. Leadenhall Market is also one of the oldest markets in London, dating back to the 14th century.

Since 1881, the stunning roofs have been designed by architect Horace Jones.

When I visited, not many shops were open, and I was hungry. I just wanted to find something to eat quickly, which caused me to forget to take more photos.

The Leadenhall Market is featured in the famous movie the Sorcerer’s Stone, one of the scenes set in Diagon Alley.

There are many restaurants in the market, and I would like to share my experience at a Korean restaurant called BiBimBop. It is exceptionally good, and although I had to wait in a long queue, it was well worth it.

It’s incredibly delicious, and the ingredients are authentic, which completely exceeded my expectations. The best part is that this meal costs only £9! During lunch breaks, I noticed many Londoners enjoying them on the go!
