The revival of Europe’s classical capital has attracted numerous artists, curators, and digital nomads. Athens, the capital and largest city of Greece, is also one of the oldest cities in the world.
Now, I will share the modes of transportation I used in Athens. Although there are only three subway lines in the city, the main tourist attractions are within walking distance, making the subway and Lime scooters sufficient for getting around.

From airport to city central.
There are three ways to travel to the city center: by taxi, bus, or train. As a backpacker, I prefer the most economical option, which is taking the bus, with a one-way fare of 6 euros.

Once you arrive at the Athens airport, you will find signs for trains and buses; simply follow the signs. After you exit, you will see additional signage.

Bus
There are four express bus routes from the airport. Please check the official website for information on the route stop signs and departure times. Athenstransports.
X95: Terminal at Syntagma
X96: Terminal at Piraeus
X93: The terminal is at KIFISOS INTERCITY bus station and you can be transferred to KIFISIAS train station
X97: The terminal is at the ELLINIKO METRO STATION of subway line 2.
However, I took the X95 bus to Syntagma, which is near my hostel, and it only took one hour to get there.

You can purchase the ticket at the ticket vending machine or the ticketing station.

The X95 is a 24-hour service that operates four buses per hour, so you won’t have to wait long.

Once you get off the bus at Syntagma, you will see the piazza. If you want to return to the airport, simply wait in the same place where you got off the bus.

I took the X95 bus to the airport at 4 A.M., and I saw many other people heading to the airport as well. Therefore, you don’t need to worry about whether there will be transportation available in the early morning.

Metro
Three Lines
The Athens Metro currently has only three routes: the long-established Green Line 1, which opened on February 27, 1869, primarily connecting the urban area with Piraeus Port; and the Red Line 2 and Blue Line 3, which opened on January 28, 2000.

I didn’t take the metro because the attractions were not too far away. Most of the time, I just walked and rode Lime scooters.

There are six different ticket options available: 24 hours, 5 days, 2 trips, 5 trips, 10+1 trips, and 90 minutes.

Bus
The blue bus are general buses, while the dark orange ones are streetcars. Both can be accessed with a 90-minute transportation ticket. I always enjoy taking a bus to explore the city and appreciate the view.

This is the urban train that connects various attractions in the downtown area.

Lime
I must say that Lime was a good friend to me during my time in Europe, especially in Paris during the strike. If you feel tired while walking, you can use Lime to reach your destination when you can’t find a bus or metro.
The transportation options we used in Athens were more affordable than those in London, Paris, and Rome. The quality of the rides was good, and they were very convenient for connecting to major attractions, allowing you to avoid worrying about traffic while visiting Athens!
我不得不說，當我在歐洲，尤其是在罷工期間的巴黎時，Lime真的是我的好朋友。 如果走路走累了，又在找不到公交車或地鐵的情況下，你可以騎它去想要去的地方。
