Cathédrale Notre Dame de Paris

Notre-Dame de Paris is called Our Lady of Paris.

Notre-Dame de Paris, known as Our Lady of Paris, is one of the most enduring and symbolic monuments of the French capital and is among the most celebrated cathedrals in Europe.

She was built in the 12th and 13th centuries and is considered one of the world’s finest examples of Gothic architecture, thanks to its pioneering use of rib vaults and flying buttresses, as well as its striking stained-glass rose windows.

Cathédrale Notre Dame de Paris is one of my favorite spots in Paris.

“Cathédrale Notre Dame de Paris” is located on the Île de la Cité in Paris and is open to the public free of charge. Visitors can explore the stunning interior of the church, which is why Notre-Dame has become one of the must-see attractions in the city.

Notre Dame was built in 1163 and serves as the religious center of Paris. Its long history has witnessed many significant events, such as the trial of Joan of Arc, the coronation ceremonies of Henry VI and Napoleon I, among others. It truly is the heart of Paris.

It is also the source of the theme of Hunchback of Notre Dame, a famous novel by the French author Victor Hugo.

它也是法國著名作家雨果(Hugo)的《 The Hunchback Of Notre Dame》主題的來源。

the Gothic architectural style

The entire building exemplifies the Gothic architectural style.

It has a long history and was significantly damaged during the French Revolution in the 19th century; however, it was completely renovated by Eugène Viollet-le-Duc.

Nowadays, it has become one of the most masterful churches in the world. Inside the church, you can see many elements reinterpreted by Eugène Viollet-le-Duc, such as gargoyles.

Looking at the church from the rear, you can see the pointed rib vault, which is completely different from the front. No matter which side you view Notre Dame from, I believe you will be awed by its majestic appearance and intricate details, just as I was.

Interior of Cathédrale Notre-Dame de Paris

The cathedral was immortalized in popular culture by Victor Hugo in his Gothic novel, *The Hunchback of Notre Dame*, which was later adapted into a Disney film. Therefore, I believe it will never fade from the minds of Parisians.

Step inside the Cathédrale Notre-Dame de Paris, and you will be transported into a realm of Gothic grandeur and timeless spirituality. The interior of this iconic cathedral is a masterpiece of medieval architecture, adorned with awe-inspiring details that captivate visitors from the moment they enter.

The Nave: A Journey Through History

The expansive nave, adorned with its towering columns and ribbed vaults, evokes a profound sense of grandeur and solemnity. Sunlight streams through the magnificent stained-glass windows, casting vibrant patterns on the stone floor—a breathtaking spectacle that highlights the artistry of medieval craftsmen. As you stroll through the nave, take a moment to appreciate the intricate carvings and statues, each narrating a story from the Bible or Christian tradition.

The Rose Windows: A Kaleidoscope of Light

One of the most striking features of the cathedral’s interior is the trio of rose windows. These massive circular stained-glass windows are adorned with vibrant depictions of saints, prophets, and biblical scenes. The South Rose, often regarded as the finest, dates back to the 13th century and continues to be a highlight for all who visit.

Notre Dame is more than just a symbol; it embodies the soul of France.

As you can see, the image depicts the fire that was discovered at 6:43 PM local time at the base of the spire, which was constructed of wood and lead in the 19th century. However, the flames quickly spread to the cathedral’s ribbed roof, composed of hundreds of oak beams, some of which date back to the 13th century.

The 500 firefighters at the scene worked tirelessly to prevent the flames from reaching the two belfry towers, where the cathedral bells are housed. Miraculously, they managed to save the structure. Gabriel Plus, a spokesman for the Paris fire service, stated, “We are satisfied and grateful that, by risking their lives, the firefighters safeguarded the integrity of the two belfries and the towers.”

Monseigneur Michel Aupetit, the Archbishop of Paris, stated, “When we arrived yesterday evening, we wanted to cry, and people were crying around us because Notre Dame is a symbol; more than a symbol, it is the soul of France.”

Make an appointment

Now, there are too many people visiting Notre Dame that if you want to go to the top, standing in line is not an option; you must make an online appointment before you go. Therefore, I am going to share how to make an online appointment.

Step 1 : download APP

download this app : JeFile.

Google Play

Apple Store

Step 2

Open the app, and you will see two options. However, please select the second option.

Note

Please note that you can choose your visit time starting from 7 AM.

Be cautious; you can only make an appointment on the same day, which means you cannot schedule an appointment for the day before.

I suggest that you do it in the morning because it’s easy to become overwhelmed in the afternoon. In my experience, the app was full when I opened it around two o’clock in the afternoon.

After you make an appointment, it will display the estimated wait time and the number of people ahead of you.

The app will vibrate to remind you in 20 minutes.

Before 10 minutes

The app screen will display the status of the QR code, allowing staff to scan it for your entry. I recommend arriving at least 10 minutes before your scheduled time.

Why? Because one time, I arrived 2-3 minutes early, and the QR code disappeared, which meant I had to book the appointment again.

If your situation is as bad as mine, you will need to try again another day. The app will indicate that the number of queues is full, and appointments will not be accepted when you open it.

Going upstairs

After going upstairs, you will first arrive at the floor of the ticket office, which is also where souvenirs are sold.

On the right is the entrance to the ticket office, while on the left is an entrance enclosed by a chain, which provides access to the top.

Remember, if you want to buy souvenirs, you need to purchase them here. There will be no other places to buy souvenirs once you leave. Some people will sit in chairs to wait for the next entrance to open.

Next entrance

After approximately ten minutes, a lady will assist you in tearing your ticket on the right-hand side of the entrance.

Continue ascending the stairs. It is said that there are 387 steps to the summit!

Monster Corridor

Before you reach the top, you will first pass through the you will encounter many stone ghosts. When I see this view, I feel it was worth climbing those stairs to be here in this moment.

Top of tower

Climb to the Towers for a Panoramic View
While the interior is captivating, don’t miss the opportunity to climb to the towers for a breathtaking view of Paris. Along the way, you’ll encounter the famous gargoyles and chimera, whose stone faces have watched over the city for centuries.

the left is entrance, the right one is export

Overall

The cathedral is often regarded as the epitome of French cathedrals, boasting one of the longest and most illustrious histories. For many Parisians, this 850-year-old landmark is, quite simply, the heart of their city, with its two Gothic square towers rising majestically above the surrounding buildings along the Seine River.

The former mayor of Paris, Bertrand Delanoë, could barely conceal his emotion as he stated, “It’s an inestimable loss … Notre-Dame de Paris must endure. We must not resign ourselves to this … this is the heritage of all humanity.”

Our Lady of Paris, Notre Dame, will require our patience for years to come. Until then, her ruins should serve as a reminder of the fragility of our history. I hope she will also inspire a new generation to learn the dying crafts that will ultimately lead to her restoration and preserve the artistry. Here’s to our Notre Dame, who will continue to inspire even in her darkest moments.
