Japan – Secret Restaurant / only open 90 minutes.

Table of Contents

The day before our flight to Japan, we unintentionally came across a news segment about a Japanese TV show that featured a hidden restaurant near Oshino, a town we plan to visit.

The restaurant is located in a secluded area near Oshino Hakkai, a site of remarkable natural beauty that we decided to visit after exploring Oshino Hakkai.

In small alley

It took us just over 10 minutes to drive from Oshino Hakkai Village to the restaurant. However, be aware that this “small alley” can accommodate only one car at a time! The vehicle we rented was a Toyota Alphard, which barely fit on the road. We had to be mindful of our surroundings; otherwise, the car could get scratched!

Get the number.

When we arrived at 11:45, some people already get in line for waiting, all of them are Japanese.

Firstly, we were unaware that we needed to obtain a number first. We simply stood in line, waiting until the man in front of us informed us that we had to go inside to ask the owner for a waiting number.

At that time, the TV program introduced that the family was managing the restaurant together, while also working full-time at a hotel located down the mountain. They operate during the lunch break, which means they are open for only 90 minutes each day and can accommodate a maximum of 60 customers.

When you reach the front of the queue, chairs will be provided for you to rest. Then, the boss lady will say, “The next person, please come in”, of course, she is speaking this in Japanese. When it is your turn, you need to listen carefully to the boss lady’s instructions.

Interior decoration

The interior of this restaurant embodies traditional Japanese style, creating a warm and inviting atmosphere. Upon entering, guests are welcomed by a spacious layout. The large floor-to-ceiling windows allow the outdoor greenery to seamlessly blend with the interior. Sunlight pours in, illuminating the entire space.

The restaurant’s design style emphasizes the use of wooden elements. From the walls to the pillars, the warm tones of the wood create a comfortable ambiance. This choice of materials not only highlights the natural beauty of the wood but also fosters a relaxing atmosphere reminiscent of home. The lighting design is simple and soft, illuminating each table while contrasting with the wooden walls, resulting in a warm and inviting space that feels open rather than crowded.

In terms of seating arrangements, the restaurant has thoughtfully established a traditional Japanese-style sitting area on the floor. Low wooden tables accompanied by seat cushions provide customers with an authentic Japanese dining experience. Additionally, there are standard tables and chairs available to accommodate guests with varying needs.

Instructions

First of all, they offer a variety of noodles, and if you want to place an order, you need to write it down.

Second, take a plate and select the side dishes you desire from the cupboard.

Third, bring all the plates you have to the counter for checkout.

Step 1

The first step is to order your noodles. The red frame in the picture indicates where to write your order. They offer ramen, soba noodles, and udon, which you can find on the menu displayed in the red frame of the next picture. Once they have cooked the noodles, they will announce it, and you can take your noodles to your table.

If you prefer not to order noodles, you can also choose rice. As shown in the blue frame in the picture, there is a self-service area where you can scoop some rice for yourself.

To be honest, our Japanese is quite poor, and they couldn’t speak English. Fortunately, there is a Taiwanese individual who speaks Japanese fluently and helped us order the noodles.

Step 2

Additionally, you can take the plate, indicated by the green frame in the picture, to select different side dishes from the cupboard, which is highlighted by the blue frame in the image. They offer options such as Japanese omelette, Japanese fried chicken (karaage), and fried rice, among others.

They also offer Sashimi.

Step 3

When you have finished, please take all your plates to the counter, including the red frame from the picture, for checkout.

What did I have?

I ordered udon with meat, along with Japanese fried chicken and fried bean sprouts.

We had six people, in the end, we only spent 4,850 yen, making it the cheapest lunch of this Tokyo trip.

Overall

This hidden restaurant experience near Oshino Village was both surprising and satisfying. After discovering this restaurant by chance on television, we decided to visit and immerse ourselves in its local customs and genuine hospitality. This experience deepened our appreciation for the Japanese locals’ love of food and tradition. Not only is the food affordable and delicious, but the warm, personal touch also makes guests feel at home. The restaurant’s secret location and limited opening hours contribute to the unique and cherished nature of this dining experience.

This affordable and hearty lunch became a cherished memory and the most unforgettable meal of our entire trip to Tokyo. If you have the opportunity to visit Oshino Village, this hidden restaurant is definitely worth exploring.
