When you visit Paris, what is the first place you will go? You will likely want to see some famous attractions, such as the Louvre, Notre-Dame, and the Eiffel Tower. As for shopping, will you choose Lafayette or Printemps? Personally, I would opt for a local market, as it is the best way to experience the local culture and lifestyle.
If you lived in Paris, you definitely can’t go to Lafayette every day unless you’re wealthy. To save money, you would likely shop at Carrefour or Monoprix for your cooking ingredients. However, in those stores, you won’t find fresh fish, beef, or chicken. You might say, “You can find those at La Bon Marché.” As I mentioned earlier, if you need to save money, that wouldn’t be your choice. The only place where you can find fresh ingredients is at the local market.
As you may know, I am someone who has a passion for visiting local markets, no matter where I go. This includes Paris, where I lived.
Marché de la Bastille is one of the largest food markets in Paris and is a favorite among locals. Located in the 11th district, it is conveniently situated near the subway, making it easily accessible for tourists. The market operates every Thursday and Sunday, extending along Richard Lenoir Avenue, where visitors can find a wide variety of goods. Each time you visit, you will encounter not only tourists but also Parisians pulling their shopping carts to purchase fresh ingredients.
Marché de la Bastille
After exiting Metro Exit 1 of Bastille station, simply turn around, and you will see Bastille Square and the July Column Monument. Bastille Square still holds significant meaning for the French, and you can observe a lot of activity here.
On the left is the Opéra Bastille.
If you proceed to the right side, you will discover the Bastille market.
There are many types of clothing, including hats, bags, accessories, and more.
This black wool bucket hat can be purchased here. Just like in Taiwan, you can negotiate prices at a traditional market. This hat was originally priced at €15, but after bargaining with the shopkeeper, I was able to buy it for €12. I still wear it in the winter.
France is the most famous romantic country in the world, known for its beautiful flowers. If your husband comes here with you, he will definitely buy some flowers for you!
One of the reasons I enjoy the Bastille market so much is that it offers fresh seafood. When I was in Taiwan, my family would visit the harbor to purchase fresh seafood; however, now that I live in Paris by myself, it is impossible for me to go to the harbor to buy seafood. The distance is truly insurmountable. Consequently, I feel quite disappointed when I cannot find fresh seafood in supermarkets. Since discovering the Bastille market, I have decided to replenish my food supplies there every week!
You must try the oysters when you visit the Bastille Market. Not only are they affordable, but you can also enjoy their exquisite flavor enhanced with a squeeze of lemon. After you finish, you can use a wet paper towel provided by the vendor, so you don’t have to worry about getting your hands messy after eating the oysters.
How can there be no fresh fruits and vegetables in the market? Today, I bought bananas and oranges for only 1.40 euros, which is much cheaper than at the supermarket!
I also bought six gold kiwis for five euros. I believe the price of kiwis is similar to that in other countries, except for New Zealand, where kiwis originate. For example, in Taiwan, one kiwi costs nearly NT$30.
In addition to enjoying oysters, be sure to try the roasted spring chicken. The meat is incredibly tender and absolutely delicious! Every time I catch a whiff of this aroma, I can’t resist buying a drumstick, which only costs me 3 euros. Lol.
This Spanish paella is very traditional. If you love paella, then you will probably enjoy it. However, it’s not for me.
About this item, I’m not sure what it is since I haven’t tried it. If you know what it is, I hope you can share. 😉 Every time I go to the Bastille market, I always see people waiting in line for it. I guess it must be very delicious.
When you walk down the streets of Paris, you can see many cheese shops. As a renowned delicacy worldwide, you can certainly find it in traditional markets.
The vintage chair of a different style that you see here.
Overall
In the Bastille Market, you can discover a variety of treasures and fresh ingredients, as well as enjoy a wide selection of delicious food. If you visit Paris and wish to immerse yourself in the local French lifestyle, I highly recommend exploring the Bastille Market!
