Pike Place Market in Seattle. As I mentioned in a previous article, you may know that Seattle is home to Starbucks Coffee.
The original Starbucks coffee shop is located in Seattle. The first Starbucks store was established in 1971 at Pike Place Market in downtown Seattle. I was able to stop by briefly, although there was a long line just to take a picture of the interior!
Although I couldn’t visit the original Starbucks store, I had the opportunity to experience the first Starbucks Reserve Roastery in Seattle. It is a stunning space that offers a wide variety of coffee options and delicious treats branded with the Starbucks name.
Their literature states that it was “the call of the siren” that inspired them to build it. I am certain that this is true, along with their undeniable passion for coffee. Why? Because it is evident that the store dazzles as you walk in. Copper, bronze, and glass create a new and sparkling atmosphere, complemented by the wonderful aroma of coffee. It is a 15,000-square-foot shrine to coffee. The building itself is a beautiful example of Art Deco architecture. Formerly known as the Packard Building, it is situated on what was Seattle’s Auto Row in the 1940s. The renovation took two years and has restored the building to its original elegance.
In this facility, you can observe that the green coffee beans are stored in large silos on-site while they await roasting in one of the two custom-made roasters. After the beans have been roasted, they are transferred to a copper cask, where they rest before being packaged for shipment or moved to the coffee bar. Additionally, you can speak with a barista to learn more about coffee.
At this location, you can certainly enjoy a variety of desserts, just like at a typical Starbucks. You will have plenty of options to choose from to find the one you would like to try.
The moment you step into the Roastery, you’re greeted by the rich aroma of freshly roasted coffee and the hum of activity. Spanning over 15,000 square feet, the space is a feast for the senses. With its warm wood accents, copper fixtures, and industrial-chic design, the Roastery is both cozy and modern—a fitting homage to Seattle’s coffee culture.
At the heart of the Roastery is the roasting area, where visitors can witness the coffee-making process in real time. Green coffee beans are roasted in small batches, ensuring each Reserve coffee blend is of the highest quality. Transparent tubes snake across the ceiling, transporting beans from the roasting machines to the brewing stations, adding a theatrical element to the experience.
Starbucks Reserve Roastery series has only five locations worldwide: Seattle, Shanghai, Milan, New York, and Tokyo. If you have the opportunity to visit any of the other Starbucks Reserve Roasteries, I would love for you to share your experience with me. 🙂
