Are you a person who loves to see the city from above?
Well, I am someone who loves to see the entire city from above. I always make it a point to find a location where I can enjoy a panoramic view of the city before traveling to another country. For example, in Taipei, you can visit Taipei 101 or Xiangshan; in Paris, you can go to the top of the Arc de Triomphe, the Eiffel Tower, or Notre Dame; and in London, you can visit the Sky Garden free of charge.
In Athens, there are five locations where you can enjoy breathtaking views of the city from above, which I am excited to share with you.
Acropolis hill
The Acropolis Hill is one of the most prominent landmarks in Athens. After visiting the Acropolis, you can enjoy the scenic views of the city from the New Acropolis Museum.
Philopappos Hill
Philopappos Hill Park is a public park located on the west side of the Acropolis, also known as Mouseion. The ancient Greeks believed that the nine Muses resided here, which adds an air of mystery to the site. This belief has helped preserve its significance in the collective memory, as it was recognized as a new center for democratic thought.
Philopappos Hill is one of the best places to watch the sunset in Athens. Due to its central location, it offers a perfect vantage point to witness the transition from day to night, providing stunning views of both the Acropolis and the entire city.
The walk up is not too strenuous and takes approximately 15 minutes from bottom to top. At the summit, you will find the Philopappos Monument—an ancient Greek mausoleum dedicated to Philopappus, a prince from the Kingdom of Commagene.
Philopappos Hill
Stoa of Attalos
You will find the Stoa of Attalos within the ancient Agora of Athens. This structure is a two-story building featuring a Doric colonnade on the ground floor and an Ionic colonnade with a balustrade on the upper level. The façade is entirely made of marble, and each story contains two aisles and twenty-one rooms along the western wall. All the rooms are equipped with doors and windows on the rear wall for lighting and ventilation, and a staircase leads to the second floor.
It is the only building in Greece that has been completely restored. Although it is not original, I believe the renovated structure is more attractive than the others.
The colonnade commemorates King Attalos II of Pergamon. It consists of two levels and serves as a space for citizens to conduct business discussions. The outer layer of the columns is designed in the Doric style, while the inner layer features the Ionic style. It has now been reconstructed to showcase ancient artifacts excavated from the Forum Romanum.
On the second floor, you can see the Temple of Hephaestus, which is a beautiful place to visit.
Areopagus hill
The Areopagus is a stark, solid marble hill located centrally adjacent to the entrance of the Acropolis. Its name translates to and during Roman times, it was referred to as The Areopagus holds great historical significance and has been the site of some of the most important events in Athens’ history.
The Areopagus Hill offers stunning views of the nearby Acropolis. As the Acropolis is a central feature of the city, observing it from various angles can become somewhat of an obsession, as it presents a completely different appearance each time. However, one must be cautious of the rocky terrain, as it can be slippery.
Lycabettus hill
The Lyabettus offers breathtaking panoramic views of the entire city.
At 277 meters above sea level, Lycabettus Hill is the highest point in Athens. Sometimes referred to as Mount Lycabettus, it is an excellent location to visit for sunset, as you can enjoy breathtaking panoramic views of the entire city. That being said, the stunning vistas make it a fantastic spot to visit at any time of day.
There are two options for reaching the summit of Lycabettus Hill: taking the funicular or hiking. During my visit, I chose to hike to the top. Since we visited later in the year, the weather was quite pleasant; however, I decided to take the funicular on the way down.
During the summer months, walking can be particularly challenging due to the heat. Therefore, ensure that you stay well-hydrated if you plan to walk on a hot day. If the temperature is exceptionally high, we recommend taking the funicular railway to the top.
The Lycabettus Hill funicular costs €4 for a one-way trip.
A funicular is a type of train designed for traversing steep inclines, making it an ideal mode of transportation to reach the summit of a hill. The Lycabettus Hill funicular charges €4 for a one-way trip. It operates at least once every 30 minutes from 9 a.m. to 2:30 a.m., and during peak hours, it may run as frequently as every 10 minutes.
It is well worth planning your day to ensure you are here for the sunset.
I believe that sunset is the best time to visit. I must say, this is a lovely place to enjoy an incredible view of Athens at any time. It is well worth planning your day to stay here for the sunset. With a bit of luck, you’ll be treated to a vibrant sky alongside the most stunning views of Athens and the Acropolis.
